GCSE Journey Turnaround before the exams !

I don’t consider myself a very ambitious parent; I have always believed that my child’s mental and physical well-being is the most important. My son faced significant challenges during his early years of secondary school, especially at John Lyons, where he struggled to keep up with the demanding curriculum. By the end of Year 10, he was at Level 4 and 5 in his subjects, and the reality hit us hard: if he didn’t improve, he would not be able to continue at the school for his A-Levels.

In light of this situation, we recognised that drastic changes were needed. To address his academic challenges, we enrolled him in Summer Crash Courses before starting Year 11, focusing on GCSE English, Maths, and Sciences. This intensive program provided him with the tools and support he desperately needed. Their professional approach and individualised attention helped him regain his confidence and enthusiasm for learning.

The transition was not easy, but with hard work and commitment, he began to see
improvement. The courses not only helped him grasp the material better but also
inspired him to push beyond his perceived limits. Throughout Year 11, he continued attending term-time courses, where the regular mock examinations played a pivotal role in his development. These practice assessments allowed him to familiarise himself with the exam format and build his exam technique, resulting in a newfound sense of determination and focus.

As the year progressed, I witnessed a remarkable transformation in my son. The hard work he put into his studies began to pay off, and he achieved 8s and 9s in his GCSEs, far exceeding our initial expectations. Now, as he continues at the same school, he has taken the next step in his academic journey by enrolling in A-Level courses in Maths, Physics, and Economics. His newfound confidence has propelled him into these challenging subjects, and I am proud to see him embrace this next chapter with enthusiasm and determination.

Looking back on this journey, I realise how critical the support and resources available at the private school and G5 Tutors have been in helping him overcome his academic hurdles. I have learned that choosing the right educational environment can significantly impact a child’s academic trajectory, and I am grateful for the guidance and encouragement that have helped my son find his footing.

It’s essential to strike a balance between guidance and independence, allowing them to take ownership of their learning while providing them with the right tools to succeed.
